Nostalgia is set to be a big trend this year in the world of fashion and beauty. As 90’s trends take centre stage, the iconic stick on gemstone trend is making a return in 2022 along with some welcomed updates.
Thanks to Gen Z’s social media domination, the stick on makeup craze inspired by season 2 of Euphoria and ‘that Olivia Rodrigo cover’ is set to take the beauty industry by storm. With everything from stick on neon liner, nail art and body decals, this trend offers the perfect excuse to get creative with your look.
We’re taking a look at the standout trend of the season and how you can nail the look.
This trend is certainly nothing new, an iconic black and white image of Nina Simone having rhinestones stuck onto her lids and brows springs to mind. Now the trend is making a serious comeback fuelled by Gen Z’s focus on acceptance, self-expression and individuality.
Euphoria’s makeup artist Donny Davy is confident that the stick-on trend could be the go to accessory of the year.
“Stickers could be the future of makeup because they’re so accessible, instantaneously gratifying and easy for anyone to use.”
Since the premiere of the hit HBO show in 2019, experimental makeup, especially bold eye looks, have been popping up all over social media. With the release of Season 2, Davy says that the beauty looks will only get bigger.
“I feel like all I’ve seen is rhinestones on Instagram and TikTok. That really blew up after Euphoria Season 1. Using them in a more refined way is the next big thing. That was a fun way of approaching rhinestones, because instead of really looking like gems, they have this more subtle twinkle to them,” says Davy.
Take a quick peek at any makeup related hashtag on Instagram and your feed will be full of experimental looks taking a spin on the stick-on makeup trend. From makeup guru Rowi Singh using opulent pearls and studs to model Hailey Bieber sporting a holographic, stick-on cat eye, the possibilities are truly endless.
Not only is this trend one of the coolest it girl looks of the season, it is also every lazy beauty buff’s dream. Stick-on cat eyes that take the tedious and fussy eyeliner application out of the equation, stick-on nail art without the cost and upkeep of a gel manicure and even stick-on body art without the commitment (and pain) of a real tattoo.
The trend is both efficient and stylish and takes the hassle out of difficult to master beauty crazes. Some beauty stickers even double up as pimple patches, so you can look cute whilst taking care of pesky zits.
The trend is even being hailed as a huge opportunity for inclusivity and representation in the beauty industry. In the US alone there are over 60 million adults living with disabilities that affect their everyday lives. Makeup application can be challenging for those without the use of one hand, difficulty gripping products or steadying their hands. The stick-on beauty trend is not only simple, it allows those who would otherwise struggle with the intricacy of a particular look to nail the trend quickly and easily.
The opportunities to experiment with the stick-on beauty trend are pretty endless, here are a few of the products you can use to get the look just in case you get a little ‘stuck’!
